Kolkata/IBNS: At least two most wanted criminals from Punjab were shot dead by Kolkata Police's Special Task Force (STF) in an encounter at Shapoorji housing complex in Kolkata's New Town on Wednesday, officials said.

According to sources in the city police, STF Inspector Kartik Mohan Ghosh sustained a bullet injury during the operation.

Acting on a tip off, a team of STF had carried out raid at the housing complex in afternoon and during the operation, the gangsters reportedly fired several rounds of bullets aiming at the cops from a flat on the fourth floor.

When policemen retaliated, two Pubjab based gangsters, who have been identified as Jaypal Bhulla and Jasprit Khara, were gunned down inside their hideout.

A senior STF official said that there were at least 45 under-trial cases against Jaypal Bhulla in four states.

"Jaypal Bhulla was accused of killing two policemen in Punjab's Ludhiana and we have inputs that he along with his associate, Jasprit Khara, had been staying at Shapoorji since May 22," an STF official told IBNS.

Police said that few pistols, at least 89 rounds of bullets and seven lakh rupees cash were recovered from their flat.

"Jaypal Bhulla and Jasprit Khara, who were killed in the encounter today, were carrying a cash reward of Rs. 10 lakh and 5 lakh respectively," a senior STF officer said.

Reacting on the matter, Punjab DGP said that Jaipal Bhullar and Jaspreet Kharar, who were gunned down by Kolkata STF today, were part of the 31 A-listed gangsters in the state involved in drug smuggling across the India-Pakistan border.
