Assam Rifles Assam Rifles to pay Rs 10 lakh to family of Manipur’s shooting victim as compensation
Guwahati: Assam Rifles will pay a compensation of Rs 10 lakh on humanitarian grounds to the family of a villager in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district who was allegedly shot dead by paramilitary force.
According to the reports, the 29-year-old man hailing from Chalwa village in Kangpokpi district was allegedly shot dead by paramilitary force on Friday night which triggered widespread outrage and angry villagers had torched a vehicle and other properties of an Assam Rifles camp.
The deceased man was identified as Mangboilal Lhouvum and local villagers claimed that he was a daily wage labourer.
An agreement to compensate the family of the victim was signed by Commander of 22 Sector Assam Rifles Brigadier PS Arora, Additional Director General of Manipur Police, Sub-Divisional Officer T Waichong and three leaders of civil society organizations on Saturday.
According to the deeds of agreement between civil society organizations, Assam Rifles and Manipur state government, Assam Rifles will compensate for the loss of life to the deceased family an amount of Rs 10 lakh on humanitarian ground.
‘Investigation of incident on the night of June 4 at Chalwa involving alleged person(s) of 44 Assam Rifles E Company, be initiated immediately by the police. The present company of 44 Assam Rifles Banlabug outpost will be removed or replaced by the same company as in Kangpokpi district headquarter at the earliest after approval from army headquarter, New Delhi. A fully functional armed police station in the area with 40 strength minimum will be set up at the earliest,” said in the agreement.
Kangpokpi district police had arrested a Major who was on deputation with the Assam Rifles, in connection with the incident.
A top police official of Kangpokpi district said that, the man suffered bullet injuries and succumbed to his injuries on the way to hospital.
