COVID-19 crisis: Australian PM Scott Morrison speaks to Indian counterpart Narendra Modi

Canberra: Australian PM Scott Morrison on Friday spoke with Indian counterpart Narendra Modi and said his nation will continue supporting India by supplying ventilators and oxygen concentrators.

India is currently witnessing a deadly COVID-19 second wave.

After his interaction with Modi, Morrison tweeted: "Just spoke with our friend, PM @narendramodi who thanked Australia for standing by India during the #COVID19 crisis. We’re supporting them with ventilators and oxygen concentrators. We won’t forget India’s generosity in exporting vaccines. We’ll work closely on global challenges."

Modi tweeted: "Spoke with my friend @ScottMorrisonMPto thank him for Australia’s solidarity and support for India’s fight against the pandemic.We agreed on the importance of ensuring affordable and equitable access to vaccines and medicines, and discussed possible initiatives in this regard."

India has registered 4,14,188 new Covid-19 cases within the past 24 hours, marking the largest daily increase since the start of the outbreak, the Health Ministry said on Friday.

With this, the cumulative tally in the country has reached 2,14,92,198.

Within the same period, the death toll has risen by 3,915 to stand at 2,34,083. More than 17.61 million patients have recovered since the start of the epidemic.

According to the Ministry, the active cases rose by 78,766 in the last 24 hours and is being pegged at 21,491,598,

As many as 3,31,507 were discharged taking the total number of recoveries in the country to 1,76,12,351.

Meanwhile, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said that a total of 29,86,01,699 samples have been tested so far for coronavirus. Out of this, 18,26,490 were tested in the past one day.

On the vaccination front, a total 16,49,73,058 people have been administered Covid-19 jabs since January 16, with 23,70,298 people being inoculated since yesterday.

To stem the Covid-19 spread, the Kerala government on Thursday announced a complete lockdown from May 8 to 16.

The lockdown will begin at 6 am on May 8.
