New Delhi/IBNS: The Supreme Court on Tuesday put on hold the Allahabad High Court's order to put five cities of Uttar Pradesh under a weeklong lockdown to check the rise in Covid-19 cases, media reports said.

The five cities are Prayagraj, Lucknow, Varanasi, Kanpur Nagar and Gorakhpur districts.

The Uttar Pradesh government, run by the country's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), challenged the high court order in the Supreme Court on Tuesday.

The apex court has asked the state government to the high court within a week the various steps taken to control the Covid-19 pandemic in Uttar Pradesh.

The Yogi Adityanath government in the top court argued that a lockdown would lead to immense administrative difficulties.

The high court on Monday passed the order stating the rise in infections has overwhelmed the medical infrastructure of the state.

India has recorded 1,761 deaths due to Covid-19 in the past 24 hours, a massive spike in the casualty figure registered in the country during the period of a single day, as per Ministry of Health released data.

The country has also recorded 2,59,170 new cases in the same period.
