Lok Sabha passes Delhi NCT (Amendment) Bill enhancing LG's power

New Delhi/UNI: Amid strong protests by the Congress, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and other Opposition parties, the Lok Sabha on Monday passed the Government of NCT of Delhi (Amendment) Bill 2021, which gives more powers to the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi.

The Bill, introduced in the Lower House of Parliament on Mar 15, seeks to amend the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi Act, 1991 which provides a framework for the functioning of the Legislative Assembly and the Delhi government.

The Bill amends certain powers and responsibilities of the Legislative Assembly and the Lieutenant Governor.

It re-defines Delhi Government as the Lieutenant Governor.

The Bill also asks the Council of Ministers of Delhi government to seek the opinion of the LG before taking an executive decision.

Lambasting over the passage of the Bill, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal termed it as "an insult to the people of Delhi."

"The Bill effectively takes away powers from those who were voted by people and gives powers to run Delhi to those who were defeated. BJP has cheated the people," Kejriwal tweeted.
