Guwahati/IBNS: The Assam police have detected a 200-meter-tunnel which is connecting India and Bangladesh in Assam’s Karimganj district.

Karimganj district has shared a 92-km border with Bangladesh.

Police suspect about possible illegal infiltration, smuggling and other illegal activities were going on through the tunnel below the fencing.

While probing an alleged abduction case, Karimganj district police had discovered the underground passageway below the international border fencing in a dense forest area at Kokaijur near Balia village in Karimganj district.

According to the reports, on December 28, an FIR was lodged at Nilambazar police station in Karimganj district and it said that, a 27-year-old person named Dilowar Hussain was allegedly abducted and sent him to Bangladesh.

Karimganj district police had started probe and arrested three persons in connection with it and during the investigation police found the underground passageway along the Indo-Bangladesh border.

Karimganj district Superintendent of Police (SP) Mayank Kumar said that, the arrested persons had shown the place from where exfiltration and infiltration were going on.

“Actually the tunnel is a hume pipe (a concrete tube) placed underneath in the border fencing to drain water and it has been used by the Border Security Force (BSF). The arrested persons had also revealed that, they had gone to Bangladesh and come back to India by using that underground passageway. Our investigation is on,” Mayank Kumar said.
