Kolkata/IBNS: A BJP worker was beaten to death in Cooch Behar district of West Bengal allegedly by Trinamool Congress activists this morning, said a media report.

The victim has been identified as Kalachand Karmakar. According to BJP and the family members of the deceased, he was killed by TMC workers. However, the ruling party has denied any involvement in the killing.

Karmakar was beaten to death when he tried to break up a clash between some people in front of his shop this morning at Tufanganj town, said an NDTV report.

He collapsed on the spot and was declared brought dead by the doctors, the report said, adding that one person has been arrested in connection with the incident so far.

Post the incident BJP workers blocked roads with Karmakar's body and called a local 12 hour bandh on Thursday, said the report.

BJP condemned the killing calling it TMC's 'murder politics'.

Asansol MP Babul Supriyo retweeted the post adding, "The TMC goons have beaten to death Cooch Behar BJP's booth president Kalachand Karmokar. But the administration has blindfolded itself, taking no steps. Very soon, people will give a befitting reply to this arrogant government."

However, senior TMC leader and North Bengal Development Minister, Rabindranath Ghosh, dismissed the allegations saying the BJP is trying to politicise an incident which resulted out of a local dispute, the report added.

TMC MP Sukhendu Shekhar Roy said in Kolkata BJP is blaming TMC even if somebody is dying of coronavirus infection, it further added.

On the other hand, local party leader Sourav Das said TMC is targeting BJP workers as it has lost ground in Cooch Behar, the report stated.
