State funeral of former President Pranab Mukherjee takes place with full military honour

New Delhi/IBNS: The last rites of former President Pranab Mukherjee took place with full military honour maintaining the strict Covid-19 protocols here on Tuesday.

Earlier the mortal remains of Mukherjee were taken to his home at 10, Rajaji Marg in New Delhi where President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, former PM Manmohan Singh, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi paid their last respects to the Congress stalwart.

A recipient of India's highest civilian honour Bharat Ratna, Mukherjee died on Monday.

He died in New Delhi's Army Hospital.

He was 84.

Mukherjee was admitted to the hospital on Aug 10 in a critical condition. He had a large brain clot, for which he underwent an emergency life-saving surgery.

He was also found to be suffering from Covid-19.

The Union Home Minister has announced a state mourning across the country from Aug 31 to Sept 6.

West Bengal, which was the home state of Mukherjee, has announced a public holiday on Tuesday.
