Kolkata/IBNS: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday extended the anti-Covid-19 lockdown in her state till Sept 20, fearing further spread of the virus which has still kept India on an edge.

All schools, colleges and educational institutions will remain shut till Sept 20 and the state will carry on with the weekly complete lockdown even in the next month.

"Considering the situation where Covid-19 is still increasing in other states, we feel it won't be a wise decision to lift the lockdown completely. So we are extending the lockdown till Sept 20. All schools, colleges will remain closed till then," announced the CM.

The state of close to 10 crore people will witness complete anti-Covid lockdown on Sept 7, 11 and 12.

However, Banerjee said her government has no objection to the resumption of metro and one-fourth of the local train services in September, as the central government is all set to announce the guidelines for Unlock 4 in a few days.

"We have no objection to the running of metros maintaining physical distancing norms and one-fourth of the total local trains," the CM said.

She has also asked West Bengal's Chief Secretary Rajiva Sinha to allow the running of flight services, which were temporarily suspended from six worst-Covid-hit cities including the national capital Delhi, thrice in a week.
