Kolkata: 27-yr-old dental student found hanging in college-hostel, police suspect suicide

Kolkata/IBNS: A 27-year-old second-year PGT-MDS (Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery) student of West Bengal government-run Rafi Ahmed Dental College was found hanging in her hostel room inside the college campus in central Kolkata's Moulali area on Thursday afternoon, reports said.

According to reports, batchmates of the student, who has been identified as Manasi Mondal, informed the local police at around 1:20 pm. as she was not opening her room's door and not responding to her friends' calls.

Policemen from Entally Police Station rushed to the campus and recovered the PGT student's body, which was hanging from the ceiling fan by means of a scarf inside her room located on the fifth floor of R Ahmed Dental College's girls' hostel.

She was rushed to NRS Medical College and Hospital where the 27-year-old was declared brought dead.

Police said that prima facie indicated that the MDS student, who was a resident of Raghunathpur in Purulia district of Bengal, had committed suicide.

Senior city police officials said that a suicide note was also recovered from her room.

"After registering an UD (Unnatural Death) case, we have initiated a probe into the matter, the body has been sent for post mortem and her family members, including her husband, have been informed," an official with the Entally PS said.

Meanwhile, the Kolkata Police in the wee hours of Thursday foiled the suicidal attempts of a 22-year-old youth and an 18-year-old girl at Adarsha Nagar (West) under Parnashree PS limits and at Lotus Park area in Shahid Nagar Colony under the jurisdiction of Netaji Nagar PS respectively.

Officials said that police had received inputs about suspected suicidal attempts via social media platforms in both cases.
