83 killed in thunderstorm and lightning in Bihar, PM Modi expresses condolence

Patna/New Delhi/IBNS: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday expressed condolences after at least 83 people were killed in heavy thunderstorms and lightning in Bihar.

The thunderstorm left several properties damaged and many have received injuries.

"Received the sad news about deaths of several people due to heavy rains and lightning in Bihar and parts of Uttar Pradesh. The state governments have promptly responded to the calamity and engaged in the relief operation. I express my condolence to the families of the victims," PM Modi wrote in a tweet in Hindi.

According to media reports, 23 districts of Bihar have been gravely affected with the maximum casualty being reported from Gopalganj.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh for the families of the victims.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also condoled the loss of lives in Bihar.

"Very disturbed by the death of 83 persons in lightning strikes and storms in Bihar, especially in Gopalganj district. People of Bengal stand by the affected people and express condolences to the families of the deceased," she wrote in a tweet.
