Deeply grateful to global community: PM Modi on India becoming non-permanent member of UNSC

New Delhi/IBNS: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said he was "deeply grateful" to the "global community" for supporting India to become the non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

Modi tweeted, "Deeply grateful for the overwhelming support shown by the global community for India's membership of the @UN Security Council. India will work with all member countries to promote global peace, security, resilience and equity."

On expected lines, India was elected unopposed as non-permanent member of the UNSC for a term of two years.

It won 184 votes in the 193-member General Assembly.

Ireland, Mexico and Norway are the other nations that won the Security Council elections on Wednesday.

It was given that India will grab a seat from the Asia-Pacific category for the 2021-22 term.

With this election for the eighth term, India will try to use the opportunity to further bolster its claim for permanent membership in the Security Council which it has been pushing for years.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah reacted, "Gratitude to the member nations for unanimously supporting India’s membership to UN Security Council. Under the strong and visionary leadership of PM @NarendraModi, India will uphold its mantra of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ and will work towards peace & prosperity of the world."
