Name and shame: UP Govt considers itself above Constitution, says Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra

New Delhi/UNI: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Sunday said the ruling BJP government in Uttar Pradesh has started considering itself above the Constitution as hoardings of anti-CAA protestors with photograph and address were put up across Lucknow.

The authorities in UP have alleged that those appearing in hoardings were accused of destroying public property during protests and asked them to pay the compensation or face action.

"The attitude of the BJP government of Uttar Pradesh is such that the head of the government and the officials have started considering themselves above the Constitution made by Babasaheb Ambedkar," Ms Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi.

Meanwhile, the Allahabad High Court on Sunday came down heavily on Uttar Pradesh government for putting up hoardings, calling it an “absolute encroachment on personal liberty” and asked the authorities to remove them today itself by 1500hrs.

The court asked Lucknow Commissioner of Police Sujit Pandey and District Magistrate Abhishek Prakash to explain the law under which the hoardings were put up.

"The High Court has told the government that you are not above the Constitution. Your accountability will be fixed," the Congress general secretary said.

The banners came up at major road crossings in Lucknow late on Thursday night on the directions of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, an official has said.
