New Delhi/IBNS: Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday demanded the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the Delhi violence which has claimed 20 lives in the last two days.

Following a meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC), Gandhi said, "Considering the whole situation, the CWC believes that the central government, specially the Home Minister, is responsible for the violence. The Home Minister must resign taking the responsibility of the violence.

The Delhi government has also failed in maintaining peace and harmony. It is also responsible for the violence."

Slamming BJP leader Kapil Mishra, who was caught threatening Delhi police, the Congress Lok Sabha MP said, "There is a well-thought out conspiracy behind the violence. The conspiracy was evident during the Delhi assembly elections. Several BJP leaders had created the atmosphere of fear and hatred by making provocative statements. Recently a BJP leader had also given ultimatum to Delhi police.

Due to inaction of the central and Delhi governments, 20 people have died."

"The Congress Working Committee (CWC) believes that the situation is grave and it requires urgent action. Adequate security forces must be deployed immediately to bring the situation under control.  Peace committees must have members from all communities to ensure that there are no untoward incidents," she added.

Gandhi said her party wants peace committee to be set up at every mahallas.

189 people have so far been injured in the clash which took place in the last 48 hours.

Slamming the BJP-led Centre, Gandhi also took the name of late Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to say, "When Vajpayee ji was the Prime Minister, he used to call an all-party meeting in these situations. They (present regime) had called a meeting but only Delhi leaders were present."

The north-east Delhi was on boil for last two days, when US President Donald Trump was incidentally in the national capital, over a fight between the supporters and protestors of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA).

189 people have been injured.

Three journalists, who went to cover the incident on Tuesday, were also injured and heckled by a mob in the north-eastern part of the city.

Clashes and stone pelting were reported in Chand Bagh area of northeast Delhi on Tuesday evening.

Late last night, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval visited the affected-areas and met with senior police officers.

Doval visited areas, including Seelampur, Jaffrabad, Maujpur and Gokulpuri Chowk to take stock of the law and order situation.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday morning urged Home Minister Shah to call in Army in the national capital, the administration of which is controlled by the Centre.

"I have been in touch wid large no of people whole nite. Situation alarming. Police, despite all its efforts, unable to control situation and instil confidence Army shud be called in and curfew imposed in rest of affected areas immediately Am writing to Hon’ble HM to this effect," Kejriwal tweeted.
