CM Pramod Sawant inaugurates Aqua Goa Mega Fish Festival

Panaji/UNI: Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant inaugurated Aqua Mega Fish Festival at SAG Ground in the city on Thursday.

Speaking after inaugurating the event organised by Directorate of Fisheries, he said government was striving towards providing good facilities to fisherman community in the state and for that a well equipped Fish Market Complex comprising of adequate cold storage and other modern amenities would be constructed at Fatorda, Margao, in South Goa.

The Chief Minister said foundation stone for the project of Fish Market at Fatorda would be laid shortly.

Stating that the government was fully committed towards welfare of people those who were in the business of fishing, Sawant urged youths of state to get involved into the business as fisheries business had lots of potential to grow in larger scale.

The Chief Minister stressed on need to explore new avenues of fishing other than fishing in the Sea and said back waters fishing and other types of fishing activities would help to make available fresh and good qualities of fish throughout a year.

Sawant also expressed that young generation need to move towards special studies in fisheries so as to make better research in fish economy.

Minister for Fisheries Filipe Nery Rodrigues spoke about the growing potential in the sector of fisheries business. Main objective of organising Aqua Goa Fish Festival was to spread awareness regarding fisheries business and various aspects of its economy, he said.

Bollywood actress Mugdha Godse said fishing business was evolving as a new career and it was very much welcoming that lots of youths were getting involved in the business.

Aqua Goa Fish Festival being held till February 15, 2020, has unique aquarium, fish pond and also variety of food stalls around. Various activities such as seminars, competitions and entertainment programmes are to be held during the festival.

On the occasion, Directorate of Fisheries felicitated Fishermen, Raponkars and Fisherwomen for their valuable contribution towards fisheries business.

Ajit Chodankar, Harshad Dhond, Minguel Rodrigues, Librata, Ana Maria Colaco, Agnelo Rodrigues, Joao Lobo and Caitan Fernandes were felicitated on the occasion.

Fisheries Director Dr Shamila Monteiro welcomed the gathering.
