Kakinada/UNI: An HP gas tanker on its way from Visakhapatnam to Hyderabad has developed leakage with its lid blown off due to sudden hitting of the overhead hook of the crane from behind while it was passing through the Toll Plaze at Eethakota on the national highway near Ravulapalem, 90 kms from here on Tuesday, police said.

The road tanker driver and cleaner, however, escaped unhurt.

The panic-stricken toll plaza staff and people from the stranded vehicles ran helter-skelter for safety.

On hearing the gas leakage, the police and fire tenders from Ravulapalem and neighbouring areas rushed to the spot and made efforts to control the gas by carrying out intensive water jetting on the tanker from further spreading of the HP gas.

The vehicular traffic on the highway remain paralysed for over three hours and the police diverted the traffic on alternate routes.

The HPL technical team from Gummalladoddi centre swung into action and closed the lid thereby averting a major mishap.

However, by the time of closure most of the HP gas from the 18 tonnes capacity ranker gushed out. The thorough traffic on the national highway was resumed by evening.

A case was registered against the crane driver for rash and negligent driving and dashing the tanker causing the mishap, official sources said.
