Internet restored in many hospitals in Kashmir

Srinagar/UNI: The broadband internet services have been restored in many hospitals and health centres after remaining suspended for about five months, bringing some relief to people associated with health sector.

However, the services continued to remain suspended at SHMS hospital and some district hospitals in the valley, including in Kupwara, since August 5, when center abrogated Article 370 and Article 35A, besides bifurcated the state into two Union Territories.

The government has said that the broadband service has been restored in 80 state-run hospitals so far in the valley while the bottlenecks are being fixed in remaining institutions.

But, besides SHMS hospital, doctors in some district hospitals, including in Kupwara also alleged that broadband internet services have not been restored in their respective institutions.

The doctors alleged that restoration of internet at government hospital is a welcomed step but should be followed by complete restoration of internet in the valley for common masses. “Due to non-availability of internet people are deprived of the knowledge which they can access online… and the most affected are students. Many people are also showing symptoms of mental diseases because of the unrest, coupled with gag on communication,” a doctor at SHMS hospital told UNI.

The communication network was suspended across Kashmir valley, including Srinagar, on August 5 as a precautionary measure to prevent rumours after the special status of the state was scrapped. Suspension of the communication -- landline, mobile and internet -- network evoked sharp reaction, particularly from the families whose relatives were outside the valley.

It was in the last week of August that landlines were restored to subscribers connected with Barzulla and Sonawar telephone exchanges. Landlines phones of subscribers, including all media organizations, from main BSNL telephone exchange were restored only on September 5.

Meanwhile, the mobile phone service was restored on October 14 while the SMS service for BSNL started from December 31 midnight.

An official spokesperson said that the government has also directed restoration of internet broadband services in respect of all other Government hospitals as well where local bottlenecks like connectivity status, billing problem etc are being worked out and fixed on priority.

“The hospitals where the facility has been restored include Principal SKIMS, Dean Medical Faculty SKIMS, Director SKIMS, Medical Superintendent, SKIMS, Chief Engineer SKIMS, SE, E&C/IT SKIMS, SE Mechanical SKIMS, Financial Advisor and CAO SKIMS, Chief of Materials Management SKIMS, Academic (Deemed University SKIMS), Examination (Deemed University SKIMS), SKIMS Soura, Head of General Medicines SKIMS, Advanced Centre for Human Genetics SKIMS, Principal GMC Baramulla, Government Medical Hospital Baramulla, Administration Officer Government Medical College Baramulla, BMO Hajjin, CD Hospital Office, CD Hospital Ayushman Bharat, Government Dental College Srinagar, Government Medical College Head Department Radiation Oncology, Government Medical College Registrar Academics, CMO Srinagar, MS GB/Children Hospital, District Hospital Ganderbal,” he said.
