New Delhi/IBNS: Taking a swipe at the Centre over the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019, which is set to become a law, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Thursday said the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) brought the "divisive" bill at a time they are drumming the 150th birth anniversary of Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi.

Attaching Congress president Sonia Gandhi's statement, Priyanka tweeted, "The BJP brought the divisive CAB to dupe the soul of the Constitution at a time they are drumming the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The Congress will fight unitedly against the BJP's divisive move."

Slamming the Narendra Modi government, Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday said in a statement, "The passage of the Citizenship Amendment Bill marks the victory of narrow-minded and bigoted forces over India's pluralism."

The controversial bill, which will grant citizenship to all non-Muslim refugees coming from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan to India before 2015, was passed by both houses of Parliament and the CAB is now awaiting the President ascent to become a law.

The bill was passed by the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday with 125 votes in favour of it while 99 MPs had voted against it.

The Lok Sabha passed the bill by a thumping majority of 311 votes as opposed to 80 on the other side.
