Burnt Unnao rape victim dies, Yogi government under fire from Opposition

New Delhi/Unnao/IBNS: Two days after getting burnt by five people including her own rapists, the 23-year old girl from Uttar Pradesh's Unnao died after battling for her life at Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital on Friday night, once again putting the Yogi Adityanath government in the dock for not providing security to the victim.

The victim suffered cardiac arrest at 10 minutes past 11 on Friday night and was declared dead 30 minutes later at 11:40 pm.

She was set on fire on Thursday morning by five men while she was heading to a local court for the hearing on the rape case filed by her against the accused from her village.

The five men including the two accused in the rape case were arrested for setting the victim on fire.

The girl in March had filed the rape case against two men from her paternal village in Unnao. The men had allegedly raped her and filmed the act.

Hitting out at the government for not providing security to the victim, Samajwadi Party (SP) chief, Akhilesh Yadav, sat on a dharna outside the Vidhan Bhavan.

Attacking the government, Akhilesh said, "This is a black day. This is not the first time when such incidents have happened. Earlier a rape victim from Unnao had to threaten to commit suicide to register an FIR."

"The Chief Minister had said convicts will be shot but he failed to save the life of a daughter," the former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister added.

Demanding stricter punishment, other former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati tweeted, "The death of the girl who was burnt in Unnao is saddening and painful. The BSP is with the family of the deceased. The UP government must take action to provide justice to the girl."

"The state governments across the country must instill fear in the minds of such criminals and the central government must make laws to ensure strict punishment like death sentence of these criminals keeping the Unnao case in mind," added Mayawati, who heads the Bahujan Samaj Party.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who is the Congress in-charge for eastern Uttar Pradesh, lashed out at the Yogi government in a tweet which reads, "Keeping in mind the previous rape incident in Unnao, why didn't the government provide security to the victim? What action has been taken against the officer who had denied to file an FIR? What the state government is doing to prevent tortures against women taking place every day?"

In a similar incident, a 19-year old girl, who was allegedly raped (then she was a minor) by former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kuldeep Singh Sengar, in July this year had met with an accident in which the jailed saffron leader was also accused of having his involvement. Two of her aunts died in the accident blamed on the BJP lawmaker.

The latest incident of the 23-year old Unnao victim's death came a day after the Cyberabad Police in Telangana killed four accused in the rape case of veterinary doctor Priyanka Reddy in an encounter.

Though police claimed they shot at the accused while were trying to escape, the country widely perceived and celebrated it as the administration's instant justice to the victim.
