'Appalling', BJP reacts after Jeremy Corbyn tweets on meeting UK Congress

India Blooms News Service | @indiablooms | 10 Oct 2019, 05:30 pm

New Delhi, Oct 10 (IBNS): Reacting to UK Opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn's tweet on a "very productive meeting" with UK representatives of the Congress and an alleged discussion with them on Kashmir, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday said it is "appalling" on the part of the Congress to share such details with "foreigners."

In a tweet, the BJP wrote: "Appalling! @INCIndia owes it to the people of India to explain what its leaders are telling foreign leaders about India. India will give a befitting reply to Congress for these shameful shenanigans!"

The reaction comes after Corbyn tweeted a photo with the Congress delegation.

"A very productive meeting with UK representatives from the Indian Congress Party where we discussed the human rights situation in Kashmir. There must be a de-escalation and an end to the cycle of violence and fear which has plagued the region for so long," the tweet read.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Anand Sharma said: "We are shocked by this misrepresentation. Any issue pertaining to Jammu and Kashmir are purely India's internal affairs."

The tweet is seen as embarrassing for the Congress party especially since the Labour Party has been a critique of the Centre's move to end special status to Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370.

According to NDTV reports, Corbyn has been under pressure from the Indian diaspora in Britain - specifically Labour Friends of India, over the party's resolution against the Kashmir decision at its conference last month.

Soon after the controversy broke, the UK Congress wing sought to clarify the same in its tweet.

It stated that the representatives had met Corbyn to reiterate that Jammu and Kashmir is an internal matter and that no intervention will be accepted.

"Our meeting with Jeremy Corbyn was held to condemn the Kashmir resolution passed by his party and to reiterate that J&K is an internal matter and outside intervention will not be accepted. BJP's malicious statements are another attempt to distract people from their failures," the Indian Overseas Congress tweeted.
