When will government open eyes? Priyanka Gandhi Vadra attacks Centre over economic slowdown

New Delhi: Attacking the Centre over the economic slowdown, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Tuesday took another potshot at the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government.

Taking to Twitter, Priyanka said, "The economy is falling into a deep recession. The sword is hanging on the livelihood of lakhs of countrymen. The decline in auto sector and truck sector is the sign of negative growth in production-transportation and declined confidence in the market. When will the government open its eyes?"

On September 8, when the Modi government completed its 100 since returning to power in 2019, Priyanka had attacked the Centre.

She had tweeted, "The government is silent after ruining the economy. The companies are in crisis and the business is disrupted. The Modi government is hiding the poor condition of the country through drama and advertisements."

After India's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) fell to 5 per cent in the first quarter of fiscal year 2019-2020, former Prime Minister and Congress veteran, Manmohan Singh, had said "the state of the economy today is deeply worrying" due to "all round mismanagement".

"The last quarter’s GDP growth rate of five percent signals that we are in the midst of a prolonged slowdown. India has the potential to grow at a much faster rate but all round mismanagement by the Modi government has resulted in this slowdown," Singh, who is a veteran economist, said a video statement.

Describing the economic slowdown as a temporary phase due to some cyclic reasons, Union Minister Prakash Javadekar on Sunday said the fundamentals of our economy are strong and we are sure that investment will increase, domestic demand will go up substantially.
