New Delhi, Oct 30 (IBNS): Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday condoled the loss of lives in the massive landslide that hit south-central Sri Lanka on Wednesday.

"The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, has expressed his deep condolences on the loss of lives due to the landslide in Sri Lanka. The Prime Minister wished the injured a speedy recovery," the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said in a statement.

Over 200 people are still feared missing after the south-central part of the country was hit by the landslide.

At least 100 people are feared killed in the mishap.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa has visited the landslide-affected residents in a central area.

According to reports, the incident took place in the hilly village of Haldummulla, about 190 km inland from the capital, Colombo.

More than 150 houses were buried in the massive landslide.

The landslide which came after heavy monsoon rains was at least 3 km (2 miles) long.

The villagers had been advised in 2005 and 2012 to move away because of the threat of landslides in the area, but many did not heed the warning.

It has been learnt that about 75 children had miraculously escaped the disaster because they were in school at the time of the mishap.
