Ram Nath Kovind, Narendra Modi pay tributes to Atal Bihari Vajpayee on his death anniversary

New Delhi, Aug 16 (IBNS): President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the memorial of former Indian PM Atal Bihar Vajpayee- 'Sadaiv Atal'- and paid tributes to him on his first death anniversary on Friday.

Vajpayee's daughter Namita Kaul Bhattacharya and granddaughter Niharika ere also present at the venue, media reports said.

Vajpayee, who had served as the PM of India three times and was one of the major BJP leaders, passed away on Aug 16, 2018.

He died at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) after prolonged illness.

He was conferred Bharat Ratna in 2015.

Vajpayee's first term as the Prime Minister lasted only 13 days in 1996.

He returned to the top position in 1998 to lead the nation until 2004. 

Vajpayee was elected to the Lok Sabha (lower house) ten times and twice to the Rajya Sabha (upper house).

He represented the Lucknow parliamentary seat in Uttar Pradesh until 2009 when he retired from active politics.
