BJP government in Karnataka cancels celebration of Tippu Sultan's birth anniversary

Bangalore, July 30 (IBNS/UNI): In the first major decision taken since coming to power in recent times, the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government has dropped celebration of birth anniversary of erstwhile Mysore ruler Tippu Sultan.

Opposition Leader in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly and former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah took strong exception to the State government’s decision.

Speaking to newsmen here on Tuesday, he said that “by cancelling state-sponsored Tippu Jayanti, the BJP government had proved that it is not a secular government”.

Stating that Tippu Sultan, who had fought and laid down his life against the colonial British empire, Siddaramaiah said that “Tippu was the first Indian to fought against the British”.

Tippu, who was also a great ruler of the erstwhile Mysuru state, and had initiated several development of his kingdom, and had won the heart of all the sections of people by his valor and Humanitarian attitude.

“The BJP which has hatred against minorities, had taken such a inhuman decision” he added.

The KPCC President Dinesh Gundurao, had also criticized the State Government’s decision to scrap the Tippu Jayanti celebrations.
