Thakor community bans mobile phones for unmarried girls in Gujarat, Congress MLA backs move

Palanpur/Gandhinagar, July 16 (UNI): In a Khap panchayat-like diktat, the dominant Thakor community has banned the mobile phone use by unmarried girls in 12 villages of Dantiwada taluka in Banaskantha district of north Gujarat.

Congress MLA Ganiben Thakor on Tuesday backed the decision.

"Such rules were necessary for better availing of benefits of Rs 1,900 crore education budget for the poor students. In this era of technology, there was nothing wrong in keeping the unmarried girls away from the mobile phone. I expect that the government too would support it," Thakor said.

On Sunday, during a meeting of Kshatriya Thakor community at Jegol village in Dantiwada taluka, several community rules were framed, included ban on use of mobile phones by unmarried girls. The meeting further decided that the parents of the girl from whom a mobile phone was recovered, would be held responsible for it.

The use of DJs and fire-crackers in any kind of social events were also banned.

In another strange decision taken during the meeting, it also made provision of Rs 2 lakh fine on the father of an eloping son and Rs 1.5 lakh fine on the father of the girl involved.
