New Delhi, May 21 (IBNS):  UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul Gandhi and daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra paid homage to late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his 28th death anniversary on Tuesday.

Former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh also paid his tributes to the late PM.

The Congress party tweeted: "Former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, UPA Chairperson Smt Sonia Gandhi, Congress President @RahulGandhi and General Secretary @priyankagandhi pay homage to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his death anniversary. #RememberingRajivGandhi."

Rajiv Gandhi became the Prime Minister of the country in 1984 following the death of his mother and immediate predecessor Indira Gandhi.

He was the youngest Prime Minister of the country at an age of 40.

He held his office till 1989. In 1991, while he was campaigning for the Congress party ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated in Madras (now Chennai).

A woman, who was later identified as Thenmozhi Rajaratnam, bent down to touch his feet during the campaign when she detonated the RDX explosives which was kept under her dress.

Along with the former Prime Minister, 25 people were killed in the explosion.
