Assam breaks its own highest voter turnout record, 81.52% voting in 2019 Lok Sabha elections

Guwahati, Apr 24 (IBNS): Assam has surpassed its own highest voter turnout record in this Lok Sabha election as 81.52% of the 2,19,91,112 voters in 14 Lok Sabha constituencies in the state had exercised their franchise in the three phases of Lok Sabha polls, which were held on April 11, 18 and 23 last.

According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), a total of 81.52% voter turnout was registered in 2019 Lok Sabha elections in Assam, which is recorded as the highest voter turnout in the general elections.

In 2014 general elections, 80.12% voter turnout was registered.

The ECI data revealed that, 78.27% voter turnout was recorded in the first phase of Lok Sabha polls held in five parliamentary constituencies in the state – Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Lakhimpur, Tezpur and Kaliabor on April 11.

Out of the electors in Assam, 81.73% male voters, 81.30% female voters and 4.89% third gender voters have exercised their franchise in this elections.

On the other hand, 81.20% voter turnout was recorded in the second phase of polls held in five constituencies – Karimganj, Silchar, Autonomous District, Nowgong and Mangaldoi on April 18 and 85.11% turnout was registered in the third and final phase of polls held in four constituencies – Gauhati, Barpeta, Dhubri and Kokrajhar on April 23.

In the third phase of polls, 90.66% voter turnout was registered in Dhubri parliamentary constituency followed by 86.60% in Barpeta, 83.16% in Kokrajhar and 80.81% in Gauhati.

Among the 14 Lok Sabha seats in the state, highest voter turnout was recorded in Dhubri constituency with 90.66% and lowest turnout was recorded in Lakhimpur with 75.05%.

Tezpur has registered 79.14% voters turnout, while 82.09% in Kaliabor, 77.49% in Jorhat, 77.26% in Dibrugarh, 79.08% in Karimganj, 79.40% in Silchar, 77.47% in Autonomous District, 83.60% in Mangaldoi and 83.24% in Nowgong.

In 4 parliamentary constituencies out of 14, more women voted than men.

A total of 87,43,967 female voters in the state exercised their rights to vote in this elections.

Women turnout in Tezpur Lok Sabha seat was 80.02% compared to 78.30% turnout for men.

Similarly, women turnout in Silchar seat was 79.63% compared to 79.19% for men, 77.57% women turnout in Autonomous District compared to 77.37% for men.

In Nowgong, 83.60% women had exercised their rights to vote while men percentage was 82.90%.

Results will be declared on May 23 with the rest of the country.
