Silchar, Apr 14 (UNI) In her first election campaign outside Uttar Pradesh, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi today participated in a massive roadshow at Silchar town, the hub of southern Assam.

Gandhi, who is the party's in-charge of UP, drove through nearly 3 km stretch of Silchar in a flower-decked open truck, to the cheer of thousands of people. It took nearly two hours for the convoy to travel the stretch from DSA Ground in Club Road to Chittaranjan Avenue in Hailakandi Road in Silchar town.

Besides the party supporters who participated in the roadshow, people lined up along both sides of the streets and climbed atop buildings to catch a glimpse of the Congress star campaigner.

Gandhi, wearing a cotton saree, was accompanied on the truck by party's Silchar candidate Sushmita Dev and party's Assam in-charge Harish Rawat.

Dev, who is also the president of All India Mahila Congress, is seeking a second term from Silchar.

Gandhi did not address any meeting, but was seen waving at the people, accepting garlands, shaking hands and also exchanging gestures with the supporters.

Earlier, Congress president Rahul Gandhi and another star campaigner Navjot Singh Sidhu, among others, had also campaigned for Dev.

Rahul had also indicated that Dev will be inducted in the Union ministry of Congress forms the government.

Polling in Silchar will be conducted on April 18 next.
