New Delhi, Apr 10 (UNI): The Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed the bail plea of Rashtriya Janata Dal supremo Lalu Prasad, one of the convicts in the infamous fodder scam, after noting that there is no merit in his petition.

Headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, the bench dismissed the bail application of the former Bihar chief minister.

"We are not inclined to grant bail to the petitioner at this stage keeping in view the facts and circumstances in which he was undergoing his jail term," the bench said, in its order.

Lalu Prasad had approached the apex court and sought bail on medical grounds clubbing with his submissions that he wanted to guide his party during the ongoing election process.

The bench told Lalu's counsel, senior lawyer Kapil Sibal, that it would ask the Jharkhand High Court to expedite the hearing in his appeals against conviction.

Lalu Prasad has, the apex court, served only 20 months in prison in four fodder scam cases in which he has been convicted and cumulatively sentenced to 25 years in jail.
