New Delhi, Mar 12 (IBNS): Ahead of the crucial Lok Sabha polls,  Hardik Patel, who led a movement for reservation in government jobs and education for Patidars in Gujarat, joined the Congress party on Tuesday.

He joined the party in the presence of Congress president Rahul Gandhi, reports said.

Rahul Gandhi and other top leaders of the Congress, including ex-PM Manmohan Singh, are currently in Gujarat to attend the meeting of its working committee.

On Mar 10, Hardik had tweeted: "

To give shape to my intentions to serve society & country, I have decided to join Indian National Congress on 12th March in presence of Shri Rahul Gandhi & other senior leaders."

Hardik Patel is the leader of Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS).

In the Gujarat assembly elections 2017, Congress had improved its tally to 80 seats but failed to stop the Narendra Modi juggernaut.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had won the state elections by winning 99 seats.
