Patna, Feb 22 (The Bihar Post/IBNS): A man in Bihar murdered his wife in a fit of rage and then calmly rushed to the local police station on his bike to surrender before the police.

The police have arrested the accused.

Police said 22-year-old Mohammad Ashiq, a resident of Araria district, had been pressing for dowry from his wife Mehrun since the marriage was solemnised a year back.

The man wanted furniture from his in-laws but his wife refused to oblige, leading to bitter verbal duel.

The fight turned fatal when the man in a fit of rage caught his wife and then strangulated her to death on Sunday, police said.

Reports said after committing the crime, the man started his bike and rushed to the nearest Tarabadi police station to surrender.

“I have come after killing my wife. Please arrest me,” the youth reportedly told the cops at the police station leaving them stunned. He was soon taken into custody.

Very soon, the cops took the man to his residence to confirm if what he had said was true and to their utter surprise found the body of his wife lying on the floor. Her body was soon sent for postmortem.

“We have arrested the man and further investigation is on,” a local police official Ranjit Kumar told the media yesterday.

Dowry has been claiming hundreds of lives every year in India. As per an official report, a total of 24,771 dowry deaths were reported in India in between 2012 and 2014 with Uttar Pradesh taking the lead with a maximum of 7,048 deaths.

This information was given to the Lok Sabha in a written reply by federal minister for Women and Child Development Ministry Maneka Gandhi in April 2016.

The minister further told the House that India recorded 348,000 cases of cruelty by husband or his relatives during this period with the West Bengal topping the chart with 61,259 such cases, followed by Rajasthan (44,3111) and Andhra Pradesh (34,835), as per the National Crime Records Bureau data.
