Mamata betrayed poor by denying Ayushman Bharat healthcare scheme: Modi at Durgapur rally

Durgapur, West Bengal: Attacking West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said the TMC supremo because of politics denied the people of Bengal the Rs 5 lakh free healtcare scheme called Ayushman Bharat. Speaking at a rally here, he said "a government which betrays the poor can never benefit anyone."

"Those who play with the lives of the poor should be punished," said Modi, adding that West Bengal could've been the largest beneficiary of Ayushman Bharat but the local government snatched it from the poor people of Bengal.

Ayushman Bharat Yojana or Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) or National Health Protection Scheme or ModiCare  is a centrally sponsored scheme launched in 2018, under the Ayushman Bharat Mission of MoHFW in India.

It is an umbrella of two major health initiatives namely, Health and Wellness centres and National Health Protection Scheme (NHPS).

Mamata Banerjee accusing Modi government of politics through healthcare scheme pulled out of it after six months of her government's association.

The West Bengal government had in July last year signed an agreement with the Centre to implement the  scheme under the joint banner Ayushman Bharat-Swasthya Sathi.

"Mamata pulled out of it because she was scared that the people of Bengal would chant the name of Modi when they benefit from this central scheme and get cured of ailments," said Modi.
