Guwahati, Jan 16 (IBNS): Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi on Wednesday said that, in view of excessive pressure being exerted on the use of petrol, the nation needs to formulate ways and means of switching its dependence from petroleum products to alternative sources of energy like atomic energy, solar energy, tidal energy and wind energy.

Inaugurating a month long public awareness campaign SAKSHAM (Sanrakshan Kshmata Mahotsav) 2019 at Guwahati Refinery Auditorium, Governor Mukhi said the country’s source of energy basket that is crude oil is diminishing at a fast rate.

The Assam Governor said that, considering the abundant availability of the un-tapped unconventional sources of energy, there should be extensive research for using these energies as an alternative to petrol.

“We need to take pledge to really enable us to make this one month long awareness campaign bear fruits in our conservation efforts,” Mukhi said.

Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s growth agenda which has pegged double digit economic growth for the country, he said that along with economic growth there would be consequent rise in the use of petroleum products and therefore, serious efforts have to be made in conserving crude oil and find alternative sources of energy that can fuel the nation.

The Assam Governor however, informed that the government has formulated various plans and strategies to enhance availability of proprietary oil and gas, both from within and outside the country.

"Initiatives such as Ethanol Blended Petrol and Jatropha based Bio-Diesel are being promoted to reduce the dependency on consumption of fossil fuels. Alongside these initiatives, which are yielding substantial benefits, energy conservation efforts need to be intensified to make the whole country more energy efficient than ever before."

"Referring  to the innovation of LED lights which have resulted in saving electricity while meeting the electricity needs to almost all the consumers of our nation, similar plans and programmes should also be taken in conserving crude oil and find alternative sources of energy that can meet our future energy demand," said he.

Mukhi also hailed Petroleum Conservation Research Association as well as other stake holders for taking pragmatic steps to devise modus operandi to conserve petrol and reduce its excessive use. He also appealed to all concerned to actively participate in the cause and transform this conservation campaign into a way of life by inculcating various small habits such as judiciously using petrol and patronage conservation programmes.

On the occasion, Sakshm Pledge’ was also taken in Assamese, Hindi and English. He also flagged off Saksham Walkathon.
