New Delhi, Nov 20 (IBNS): A Delhi court on Tuesday awarded death sentence to one of the convicts found guilty of killing two Sikh men during the 1984 riots.

The court awarded death penalty to Yashpal Singh.

The other convict-Naresh Sehrawat-was given a life sentence.

During the 1984 riots, Naresh Sehrawat and Yashpal Singh were convicted of murdering Hardev Singh and Avtar Singh.

The incident had occurred in Delhi's Mahipalpur area.

The court awarded the first death sentence in the case related to 1984 riots.

Almost three decades and a half since the nationwide anti-Sikh riots of 1984 in the wake of Indira Gandhi's assassination,  a Delhi court convicted two men in connection with the killings of two Sikh men in 1984 at Mahipalpur village in south Delhi during the massacres on Nov 15.

The anti-Sikh riots had erupted in different parts of the country following Indira Gandhi's assassination by her Sikh security guards in the wake of the army operation in the Amritsar Golden Temple to flush out terrorists. The pogrom claimed at least 3,000 lives across the country.
