Guwahati, Nov 8 (IBNS): All Assam Students Union (AASU) and 28 other ethnic organisations of the state on Thursday took out a massive protest rally in Guwahati against the Citizenship Amendment Bill.

Over 10,000 students, leaders of the ethnic organisations, supporters took part in the protest rally as a warning against the Citizenship Bill that came out in front of Assam assembly.

The Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016 is aimed to grant Indian citizenship to the Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian refugees from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

The protesters warned the both the central and state governments that they will continue their democratic movement against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, the Foreigners (Amendment) Order, 2015, the Passport (Entry into India) Amendment Rules, 2015 and the proposed long-term visas to people from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan until they are cancelled.

Samujjal Bhattacharya said that in any atmosphere, at any cost, they will not accept the bill.

Bhattacharya said: “Not only the bill, the Foreigners (Amendment) Order, 2015, the Passport (Entry into India) Amendment Rules, 2015, the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 and the proposed long-term visas, we are opposing all. Before elections they (BJP) had committed to the people of Assam that they will protect the interest of the indigenous people.

"After coming into power, they are trying to protect interest of the illegal Bangladeshis. We cann’t accept it. This is a warning protest, this is a warning to the government. You cann’t run the government to protect the interest of the illegal Bangladeshis."

The AASU leader said they will not spare anybody and this is a strong warning.
