Punjab Train mishap: CM Amarinder Singh arrives in Amritsar, visits hospitals

Amritsar, Oct 20 (IBNS): Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Saturday arrived in Amritsar city and visited several hospitals in the city where people, who were injured during the train mishap on Friday, are undergoing treatment.

At least 60 people were killed when a train ran over people who were standing on the railway track to watch the burning of Ravana effigy on Friday.

Ravana effigies were burned across the country, including in Amritsar city, as a part of the Dusshera festival.

After arriving in Amritsar, Singh met district officials and the crises management team over the relief operations performed following the mishap.

"Was briefed by the district officials and the crises management team about the #AmritsarTrainAccident and the relief operations on arrival at Amritsar airport. Going on to visit the injured in various hospitals," Singh tweeted.

He visited Amandeep Hospital and Civil Hospital in the city to meet the patients undergoing treatment at the medical facilities.

Meanwhile, the Punjab government ordered a state mourning on Saturday.

All offices and educational institutions will remain shut in the state on Saturday.

The accident took place at Dhobi Ghat near Jaura Phatak at 6:45 pm on Friday.

The train was on its way from Jalandhar to Amritsar.

According to reports, a huge crowd gathered at the railway tracks to watch the burning of Ravana effigy which is a part of Dussehra celebrations.

When the first train came, they could not hear the sound due to exploding crackers.

According to reports, a second train also ran over the people.
