Mamata Banerjee expresses agony over Amritsar train accident

New Delhi, Oct 19 (IBNS): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday expressed sadness over the major railway mishap in which several died as a train ran over people standing on tracks to watch burning Ravana effigy near Amritsar earlier in the evening.

In a tweet, Benerjee wrote: "Very very sad to learn about the unfortunate rail incident in Amritsar during Dussehra festivities.
I have no words to describe my shock and agony. My heart goes out to the family members of the victims. Pray that the injured persons recover very quickly."

According to reports, over 50 to 100 people died who gathered to watch the burning of Ravana effigy which is a part of Dussehra celebrations.

The train which hit people is Amritsar-Howrah mail.

The accident took place at Jodha Phatak near Amritsar.

Police are now conducting evacuation of people.

Injured have been taken to hospital.

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh will visit the spot on Saturday.
