PM Modi expresses sadness over Amritsar train accident

New Delhi, Oct 19 (IBNS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday expressed sadness over the major railway mishap in which several died as a train ran over people standing on tracks to watch burning Ravana effigy near Amritsar earlier in the evening.

In a tweet, Modi wrote: "Extremely saddened by the train accident in Amritsar. The tragedy is heart-wrenching. My deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their loved ones and I pray that the injured recover quickly. Have asked officials to provide immediate assistance that is required."

According to reports, over 50 people died who gathered to watch the burning of Ravana effigy which is a part of Dussehra celebrations.

The accident took place at Jodha Phatak near Amritsar.

Police are now conducting evacuation of people.

Injured have been taken to hospital.

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh will visit the spot on Saturday.
