Bhima Koregaon case: Bombay HC pulls up Maharashtra police for holding press conference

Mumbai, Sep 3 (IBNS): The Bombay High Court on Monday criticised the Maharashtra police for holding a press conference to detail evidences they had against five human rights activists, who were initially arrested over terror charges and for inciting violence at Bhima Koregaon in Maharashtra in January this year, media reports said.

While hearing the petition, the high court said how can police hold press conference when the matter is subjudice.

"How can the police do this? The matter is subjudice. The Supreme Court is seized of the matter. In such cases, revealing information pertaining to the case is wrong," NDTV quoted Justice Bhatkar.

The petition was filed by Satish Gaekwad, who claimed to be a victim of the violence.

Gaekwad wants the case to be handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed that five activists- Varavara Rao, lawyer Sudha Bharadwaj, activists Arun Fereira, Gautam Navlakha and Vernon Gonsalves- should be kept under house arrest till Sept 6.

The direction was given by the five-judge bench led by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra while hearing the pleas challenging the arrest of the five activists.

The raids were carried out in several cities like Delhi, Faridabad, Goa, Mumbai, Ranchi and Hyderabad.
