New Delhi, Aug 20 (IBNS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to his predecessor Rajiv Gandhi on the latter's birth anniversary on Monday.

In a tweet, Modi said: "Tributes to our former Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi Ji on his birth anniversary. We remember his efforts towards the nation."

Born on Aug 20, 1944, Rajiv Gandhi was the seventh Prime Minister of the country, succeeding his late mother Indira Gandhi.

He was the youngest person to assume the chair of the Prime Minister at the age of 40.

He became the Prime Minister in 1984 with a huge majority of the Congress party but was voted out of power in 1989.

Rajiv Gandhi was the MP from Amethi constituency of Uttar Pradesh between 1981 and 1991.

In 1991, he was awarded Bharat Ratna, the country's highest civilian honour.
