Chennai, Aug 8 (IBNS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday paid tribute to the mortal remains of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK patriarch, M Karunanidhi and described him as an "extraordinary leader", who devoted life for the people.

"In Chennai, I paid tributes to an extraordinary leader and a veteran administrator whose life was devoted to public welfare and social justice," Modi tweeted.

"Kalaignar Karunanidhi will live on in the hearts and minds of the millions of people whose lives were transformed by him," the PM said.

Earlier in the morning, Modi arrived in Chennai to visit Rajaji Hall where Karunanidhi's body was kept to enable the people to pay their last respect to the departed leader.

Karunanidhi, a five-time Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu who had switched to politics from screenwriting, died on Tuesday at the age of 94.

He passed away at 6:10 pm, at Kauvery Hospital in Chennai where he was admitted.

The country is observing a national mourning day on Wednesday due to the demise of the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister.

Karunanidhi will be buried at Chennai's Marina Beach.
