Srinagar, Aug 7 (IBNS): Four soldiers, including a major, were martyred while two terrorists were killed in a gunbattle in north Kashmir's Gurez under Bandipore district on Tuesday as the army claimed to have foiled an infiltration bid from across the Line of Control, media reports said.

The operation is going on as the army suspects presence of more militants in the area. The reports said the death toll could further rise.

The army officials killed during the operation are Major KP Rane, Havaldar Jamie Singh, Havaldar Vikramjeet and rifleman Mandeep of 36 RR.

A team of specialized para commandos has been rushed to the area as reinforcement.

Media reports said quoting an army spokesman that the gunbattle started after a group of six to eight terrorists that crossed the  LoC were challenged. In the encounter, two terrorists were killed while two others are still trapped in the cordon laid around them. Four soldiers including a major and three other ranks were martyred in this operation.

The spokesman said the militants were given cover fire by the Pakistan Army by resorting to ceasefire violation to divert the attention of the troops on the LoC.
