Assam flood : Over 4.25 lakh people affected, three people drown, one die in landslide

Guwahati, June 16 (IBNS): The flood situation in Assam is still grim while flood waters inundated more areas, affecting over 4.25 lakh people and claiming three more lives in the state, on Saturday as death toll mounted due to flood and landslides to seven.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), three persons drowned in Cachar and Hojai district on Saturday.

Two persons drowned in Barak Valley’s Cachar district, while one person in Hojai district.

Apart from it, a dead body was recovered in Dima Hasao district as the person was missing after massive landslide at Mahur area in the district.

Earlier, two persons died in landslides at Mahur area under Haflong sub division in the hill district

Over 4.25 lakh people of 716 villages in seven districts are affected by the first wave of flood in the state.

Over 1.95 lakh people are affected alone in Karimganj district, while 1.88 lakh people are hit in Hailakandi district.

Over 1 lakh people have taken shelter in 191 relief camps set up by the administration of the flood hit districts.

191 number of camps are operational in Karimganj, Hailakandi, Karbi Anglong (west), Hojai, Cachar and Golaghat with 1,00,010 inmates and 22 number of relief distribution centres are also operational in Karbi Anglong (west), Hojai, Cachar and Golaghat districts.

NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) and SDRF (State Disaster Response Force) teams have been engaged into service in the flood affected areas for search and rescue operation.

On Saturday, the NDRF and SDRF teams have rescued 340 persons in from Karimganj, Hailakandi, and Cachar districts.

On the other hand, following incessant rains in the state in past couple of days, water levels of Brahmaputra river and its tributaries have been increased and crossing danger level mark in many places.

Brahmaputra at Neamatighat (Jorhat), Dhansiri at Numaligarh (Golaghat), Jia Bharali at N.T. Rd Xing (Sonitpur), Kopili at Kampur (Nagaon), Barak at A.P. Ghat (Cachar) and Badarpurghat (Karimganj), Katakhal at Matizuri (Hailakandi), Kushiyara at Karimganj (Karimganj) are flowing above danger level.

In Guwahati, water level of Brahmaputra river has been increased and it brings threat to the city also.

According to the Central Water Commission, water level of Brahmaputra river in Guwahati has increased by 2 cm in per hour.
