Karnataka: Congress wins Jayanagar seat by 4000 votes

Bengaluru, Jun 13 (IBNS):  The Congress has clinched victory in Bengaluru's Jayanagar constituency, in another setback to the BJP in Karnataka.

The constituency went to poll two days ago.

According to media reports, Congress candidate Soumya Reddy  defeated  Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) nominee B N Prahlad  by 4000 votes.

The Jayanagar election was postponed after the death of BJP  candidate BN Vijay Kumar just days before the assembly polls in Karnataka.

The state elections were held on May 12.

People of the state have meted out a fractured mandate with the BJP emerging as the single largest party with 104 seats.

Though the BJP had formed a minority state government under the leadership of BS Yeddyurappa, the latter resigned after the saffron outfit failed to prove majority in the Vidhan Soudha.

Despite fighting as opponents in the polls, the Congress and former Prime Minister Deve Gowda's Janata Dal (Secular) stitched a post-poll alliance to form a coalition government with the support of 117 MLAs.

Now the alliance has 119 seats following the Congress' victory in Jayanagar constituency and RR Nagar seat, which also went to poll recently.

In Jayanagar, unlike in RR Nagar, the BJP fought a bipolar electoral battle with the Congress as the JD(S) had withdrawn its candidate.
