Tuticorin/Chennai, May 24 (IBNS): Tamil Nadu government has disconnected power supply to the Sterlite Copper plant in Tuticorin following the violence that erupted surrounding protests about the plant's expansion, according to media reports.

So far 12 people have died from violence as protests against Sterlite's copper plant turned violent early this week and the police had to resort to firing, media reported.

On Wednesday too, protesters turned violent, setting fire to a police vehicle and pelting cops on duty with stones. One person died in the violence, media reported.

Digital media videos showing alleged police atrocities during the violence has also fuelled discontent across the state, media reports said.

The local administration has suspended internet services in Tuticorin and two other neighbouring districts since Wednesday evening to restore calm. According to latest reports, the services will not be available for the next five days.

The state government has also transferred the police chief and the District Collector of Tuticorin late on Wednesday.

Prohibitory orders are also in place in parts of Tuticorin.
