Karnataka CM Yeddyurappa resigns ahead of floor test

IBNS | @indiablooms | 19 May 2018, 04:12 pm

Bangalore, May 19 (IBNS) Two days after his swearing-in amid controversy over the Governor's decision, BS Yeddyurappa on Saturday resigned as the Karnataka chief minister ahead of trust vote in assembly.

Ahead of the crucial floor test BS Yeddyurappa addressed the Assembly and said he could not forget the love and support he received from the people of the state.

The house was adjourned.

The floor test was scheduled at 4 pm. BJP has 103 MLAs in the House, which is a few seats short of the magic figure.

Apparently, the Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular), which formed a post-poll alliance, are in an advantageous position as their total number of seats are well over the majority mark of 113.

Congress' 78 MLAs are set to support former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda's JD(S), which bagged 38 seats, to form the next government.

Congress had earlier cried foul of a horse-trading attempt by BJP to stay in power and had moved Supreme Cout that had cut short the floor test time from 15 days to just about 24 hours for the BJP.

The Karnataka Governor had triggered a row on Wednesday by inviting BJP's Chief Ministerial candidate BS Yeddyurappa to take oath, which eventually occurred a day later despite Congress' attempt to stall it by moving the Supreme Court.

Though reaching the majority mark of 111 could be an uphill task for the BJP with 103 seats under its belt, the saffron outfit is exuding confidence in winning the floor test.
