Guwahati, Apr 2 (IBNS): Meghalaya police recovered a huge cache of arms belonging to banned outfit Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) from the forests of Durama hills in East Garo Hills district on Sunday evening, which were buried in the forest area.

Based on intelligence input, Meghalaya police were dispatched with metal detectors to scout the ground at Dorengkigre area and police team recovered 21 pistols, magazines, two walkie-talkie sets, lethal arrow heads, GNLA seals and documents.

East Garo Hills district Superintendent of Police R TG Momin said that, the recovered arms were buried in the forest area left behind by slain GNLA Chief Sohan D Shira, who was killed in an encounter with security forces on February 25 last.

The Dorengkigre area is known as a stronghold base of the Garo militant group.

This is the second recovery within a week in East Garo Hills district.

On March 29, security forces recovered 14 steel casings of claymore used to make IED bombs and three bulletproof vests at Nengmandalgre village.
