At least eight killed in West Bengal road mishap

Kolkata, Jan 17 (IBNS): At least eight persons were killed and several others were injured when a public bus overturned and fell into a roadside ditch at Satkui area under Kharagpur Local Police Station limits in West Bengal's West Medinipur district, officials said.

According to reports, a Midnapore town to Kharagpur bound private bus lost its control, after its driver tried to save a motorcyclist, and fell into a roadside canal at around 3:15 pm.

As many as 40 passengers of the bus were rescued and rushed to nearby hospitals where five of them were declared brought dead.

Three more persons died later in the hospital while more than 20 injured are being treated in Medinipur Medical College and Hospital in critical conditions.

A source in the hospital told IBNS that death toll in the accident may rise.

Local police, however, have started probe into the mishap.
