One year of Demonitisation: PM Modi salutes people, opposition takes jibe

New Delhi, Nov 8 (IBNS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday took to social media to praise the Indian citizens on the completion of one year of the demonitisation, a move through which the present government banned old Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes.

"I bow to the people of India for steadfastly supporting the several measures taken by the Government to eradicate corruption and black money. #AntiBlackMoneyDay," the Prime Minister's tweet read.

"125 crore Indians fought a decisive battle and WON. #AntiBlackMoneyDay," an ensuing tweet read.

Sharing a clip on Twitter, he said, "Here are the benefits of demonetisation, encapsulated in this short film. Have a look. #AntiBlackMoneyDay."

The Prime Minister also urged people to share their views on the same on the NaMo app.

"What do you feel about the efforts to uproot corruption & black money. Tell me through this survey. http://nm4.in/dnldapp ."

Meanwhile, the opposition took potshots at the Prime Minister for the same.

Congress vice president and a stern critic of Narendra Modi, Rahul Gandhi, called demonitisation a 'tragedy'.

Slamming it as a 'thoughtless act', Rahul said, "Demonetisation is a tragedy. We stand with millions of honest Indians, whose lives & livelihoods were destroyed by PM’s thoughtless act."

West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee tweeted, "I have turned my Twitter DP black #DeMoDisaster. Let us raise our voices #Nov8BlackDay."

In her Facebook page, Banerjee said, "Demonetisation is a big scam. I repeat, demonetisation is a big scam. If thorough investigation is conducted, this will be proved."

"Demonetisation was not to combat black money. It was only to convert black money into white money for vested interests of political party in power."

"Black money became ‘white fund’ for them and the country was plunged into darkness," she added.

In hindsight, the note ban move has invited contrasting opinions and while some have welcomed it as a brave stance, some said it has crippled the Indian economy.

Former Union Minister and the president of Rashtriya Janata Dal, Lalu Prasad Yadav said, "BJP should explain why dictatorial & foolish step of #DeMoDisaster ever be celebrated? Nation gained nothing & economy suffered for nothing."
