West Bengal government moves Supreme Court against Aadhaar linkage

Kolkata, Oct 28 (IBNS): Challenging the central government's directive for linking Aadhaar, a 12-digit unique identification number, to all social welfare schemes, the West Bengal government has moved the Supreme Court, media reports said.

The top court will hear the state government's plea on Monday.

The fresh rift between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led central government and the Mamata Banerjee government over the Aadhaar linkage has started couple of days ago.

Banerjee, while speaking at the Trinamool Congress (TMC)'s core committee meeting, dared the central government by saying she will not link her phone number to Aadhaar.

She said: "I will not link my cell phone with Aadhaar. Let them disconnect my cell phone number. I can smell this a conspiracy to by the central government. They want to tap phone calls."

"It is unfortunate that people are scared of Central government. By introducing linking Aadhaar with cell phone they want to hear the conversation between a wife and husband," the chief minister said at the meeting.

The Centre on Wednesday extended the deadline for linking the Aadhaar to all programmes from December 31, 2017 to March 31, 2018.

However, the extension of the deadline is applicable to only to those who do not have the Aadhaar card or in the process of enrolling.
